The 25 best games on the Playstation Vita (PSVita)

The Playstation Vita (PSVita) is the successor to the Playstation Portable and was released at the end of 2011 and in Europe we could find the Vita in stores from February 2012. In total, 1732 different PSVita games have been released. That's quite a few. We have listed the 25 best.

25 Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Sega knocked it out of the park with this kart racer that genuinely rivals Mario Kart. The transformation gimmick isn't just for show. Your vehicle seamlessly morphs between car, boat, and aircraft depending on the terrain, creating a thrilling sense of variety. The PS Vita version maintains the console experience remarkably well, with vibrant visuals that pop on the OLED screen and silky-smooth performance that never drops below the target framerate.

What makes this game special is its track design. Each course draws inspiration from different Sega franchises, from Jet Set Radio to Panzer Dragoon, and they dynamically transform as you race through them. One moment, you're speeding along a regular track, the next, the road crumbles and you're flying through the air or skimming across water.

The sound design deserves particular praise too. Remixed classic Sega tunes accompany each track, triggering waves of nostalgia while still feeling fresh. The handling strikes that perfect balance between accessibility and depth – easy to pick up but with enough advanced techniques to master. With a robust single-player World Tour mode and frantic multiplayer options, it's the definitive portable racing experience on the Vita.

24 Lumines Electronic Symphony

Tetsuya Mizuguchi's masterpiece rhythm-puzzle game found its perfect home on the Vita. Lumines Electronic Symphony blends addictive block-dropping gameplay with pulsating electronic music in a way that creates a state of pure flow. The premise is simple: match same-colored blocks to clear them, but the execution is sublime.

What elevates this beyond a simple puzzle game is how the gameplay synchronizes with the music. Each level (or "skin") has its own visual style and soundtrack, with a timeline sweeping across the screen in time with the beat. Blocks only disappear when the timeline passes over them, creating a rhythmic gameplay loop that's hypnotically engaging.

The Vita version boasts exclusive features like touch controls that actually enhance the experience rather than feeling tacked on. The soundtrack is absolutely stellar featuring artists like The Chemical Brothers and LCD Soundsystem. The HD visuals are crisp and mesmerizing, especially on the Vita's screen.

There's a surprising amount of depth here, with different block types and power-ups that add strategic layers. It's the kind of game you can pick up for five minutes or lose hours to, making it perfect for portable play. When your moves sync perfectly with the music, it creates moments of gaming euphoria that few other titles can match.

23 Ys: Memories of Celceta

This action RPG breathes new life into the legendary Ys series, offering fast-paced combat and exploration that feels perfectly tailored for portable play. As amnesia-stricken hero Adol, you're tasked with mapping the vast forest of Celceta while recovering your lost memories. The premise might sound familiar, but the execution is anything but.

The combat system strikes gold with its satisfying hack-and-slash mechanics, simple enough to grasp immediately but with enough depth to remain engaging for dozens of hours. You can switch between party members on the fly, each with unique abilities that encourage strategic thinking against the game's diverse enemy types and challenging boss battles.

Visually, it's one of the Vita's most impressive titles, rendering expansive environments with minimal loading times. The soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal. A hallmark of the Ys series. With pulse-pounding battle themes and atmospheric exploration music that will have you reaching for headphones.

What really makes Memories of Celceta special is how it balances accessibility with challenge. The difficulty curve is expertly crafted, the story unfolds at a perfect pace, and the bite-sized nature of exploration makes it ideal for on-the-go gaming. It's a JRPG that respects your time while still delivering a substantial adventure, showing that the genre can work brilliantly in portable form.

22 Dragon's Crown

Vanillaware's gorgeous side-scrolling beat 'em up is a visual feast and a gameplay triumph. Dragon's Crown combines stunning hand-drawn art with deep RPG mechanics and frantic multiplayer action. The six playable characters offer dramatically different playstyles from the nimble Elf's ranged attacks to the Fighter's tank-like defense encouraging multiple playthroughs.

The controversial art style, with its exaggerated character proportions, might initially draw attention, but it's the fluid animation and incredible attention to detail that truly impress. Every frame looks like a painting come to life, with backgrounds that contain countless small details you'll notice on repeat playthroughs.

Combat feels weighty and impactful, with satisfying feedback for every blow. The RPG elements add surprising depth. You'll gather loot, enhance equipment, and unlock new abilities as you progress. The cooking system between dungeons adds another layer of strategy as you prepare buffs for upcoming challenges.

What sets Dragon's Crown apart is its incredible replayability. After completing the main campaign, you'll unlock higher difficulty levels with better loot and tougher enemies. The procedurally generated elements in dungeons keep things fresh, and the score attack nature of stages encourages perfecting your runs. It's a game that keeps on giving, making it one of the most content-rich titles in the Vita library.

21 Unit 13

In a library full of ports and remasters, Unit 13 stands out as a Vita exclusive that was designed from the ground up for the system. This third-person shooter from Zipper Interactive (the SOCOM developers) delivers tight, tactical combat across 36 diverse missions that are perfect for bite-sized gaming sessions.

The game's structure is its secret weapon are the missions. They are self-contained and typically completable in 5-15 minutes, making them perfect for commutes or quick play sessions. Yet there's substantial depth here, with scoring systems that reward stealth, accuracy, and speed. Each of the six playable operatives has unique abilities that encourage different playstyles, from the tank-like commando to the stealthy infiltrator.

Visually, Unit 13 makes excellent use of the Vita's hardware. Environments are detailed and varied, from dusty Middle Eastern villages to high-tech facilities, and the lighting effects create a surprising amount of atmosphere. The controls are exceptionally well-implemented, with precise aiming via the right stick and optional touch controls that actually enhance rather than hinder gameplay.

While the story is minimal, the focus on pure gameplay pays off. The online cooperative mode is a highlight, letting you tackle missions with a friend. Unit 13 proves that proper shooters can work on handhelds when designed with the platform's strengths in mind, rather than simply shrinking a console experience down.
